The word
الزِّمَام
zi·mām
noun · Arabic · pl. أَزِمَّة
The rope or rein that guides the horse, the camel, the ship. By extension — the grip of the one who leads.
In classical Arabic, zimām is what the leader holds. The reins. The helm. The cord by which a thing is guided — and through which control is exercised. It lives in everyday speech: to take the zimām is to take command; to let it slip is to lose control of one's affairs.
